Residential Resources

If people think about Environmental Health and Safety topics, they often do so only at work. This is ironic since work is the place that they want to be the least and ultimately takes up a proportionally smaller amount of our time. Think about just the amount of sleep that you complete, and it won't take long to recognize the fact that home should definitely be a location that we work to make the indoor environment safe. Areas of concern should include:

  • Indoor Air Quality- Do you think about what you are breathing when you are at home playing with the kids? Our air is critical to our well being. There is not a moment that goes by that we don't need breathable air. Unfortunately the ultra efficiency designs that are used in many homes over the past 3 decades have worked to make them more energy efficient at the cost of allowing pollutants to fester and grow. This exposure can present a host of complication in the lives of the home owner. Including the increased prevelance of asthma. Some risks are simply unavoidable, but the good news regarding indoor air pollution is one risk that you can do something about.Air Quality Home Test
  • Lead Paint- Lead based paint is incredibly durable and was used extensively prior to the late 1970's. Developing children are known to eat paint chips because of the metalic taste. Unfortunately this can lead to developmental problems resulting in diminished mental capacity. Home owners can also be exposed to Lead through their drinking water. Because of the low cost, old pipes were often made with high amounts of lead. Over time this lead can dissolve into the water and expose home owners and their families. Even though communities are required to test for lead, they are not required to test from the main pipe into the house. This means that your local water system can contain levels of lead at less than the regulatory standard while still exposing your family to excess amounts of lead.
  • Asbestos- Though everyone is araid of it, not many people can tell you why asbestos is such a concern. Generally you will get general answers regarding the likelihood cancer. Some will even discuss mesothelioma (http://assurancecompliance.com/asbestos-causes-mesothelioma) or asbestososis. What they fail to tell you is the fact that when it is treated with respect, it actually make the building dafer.
